Good news! It is expected that a draft resolution of a new UN convention on the rights of older persons will be presented at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council in Geneva (24 February to 4 April). To build up to this, GAROP is launching a campaign to raise awareness today, 10 December, on Human Rights Day. Please see the flyer below for more information and details about different ways you can promote this draft resolution within your own network and beyond.
I also want to highlight an informal meeting on Tuesday, 17 December at 13:00 CET where GAROP will share additional information about their plans during the run-up to the Human Rights Council.
We have very exciting news to share with you this Human Rights Day!
We are expecting a draft resolution to be presented at the next UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva (24th February to 4th April 2025) that will establish a drafting process for a new UN convention on the rights of older persons!
If adopted this resolution would significantly raise the profile of older persons’ rights and could have a positive and immediate impact on your advocacy at the national and international levels. Thank you for all of your hard work over the years that has enabled us to get to this point.
We urge you all now to get fully on board with our campaign in order to secure the decision that we have been campaigning for together over many years and be part of this monumental step forward!
Today, on Human Rights Day (10th December), we are launching a campaign to generate the widest possible awareness and support over the next few weeks in the run-up to this crucial Human Rights Council session.
- Use our new Call to Action to find out how you can incorporate our call into your advocacy with governments and in different fora and processes over next few weeks.
- Access the GAROP Steering Group’s public statementlaunching the campaign on Human Rights Day and share it with your government, including its Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva.
- Follow us on social media (X, Facebook, Instagram), contribute to the online conversation, and make sure to tag your government and spread the word across your networks and contacts! We will be posting campaign messages every Tuesday and with increased frequency in the run-up to the next Human Rights Council session in early 2025.
More resources to support our joint advocacy will be shared soon and we encourage you to join our member planning meeting next week as we prepare to step up our engagement in Geneva (see below for details).
